What is a Parenting Coordinator?

A Parenting Coordinator is a neutral third party, typically a mental health or legal professional , appointed by the court to help high-conflict parents resolve ongoing custody disputes without returning to court. In North Carolina, PCs are given authority defined by the court's appointing order. They can make binding decisions on certain issues and help parents develop more functional co-parenting patterns over time.

What is a Guardian ad Litem?

A Guardian ad Litem is appointed by the court to represent the best interests of a child in a custody proceeding. The role is to independently investigate the child's circumstances and make recommendations to the court about what arrangement would best serve the child.

How is a PC or GAL appointed?

Both roles are require a court issued appointment order. In most cases, one or both attorneys file a motion requesting the appointment, or the court orders it on its own.
